Cartmel Races
Horse racing has taken part on the famous racecourse since 1845, even earlier in some record books. Race days at Cartmel are still the biggest gatherings of the whole National Hunt season, yet on the other 360 days of the year, it is hard to picture the thoroughbred racehorses hurtling around the challenging racecourse with the carnival atmosphere bellowing away in the background. The course at Cartmel is a left handed oval of about a mile, which is bisected by the finishing straight. The run-in at just over 4 furlongs is the longest in the country, although the tight nature of the bends and the relatively flat contours often help horses to recapture lost form. It is well worth noting that some horses run particularly well at Cartmel and often win here but nowhere else. |
|
| The course is popular with many southern trainers including Martin Pipe, Michael Chapman and Dai Burchill but as often as not local trainer Dudley Moffat picks up at least some of the prize money. |
